“$200?! I’m robbing you!”

I remember this scene between Gilbert Gottfried and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987. I was a teenager, and I believe it was my first exposure to Gottfried’s comedy. I remember thinking, “This guy is funny!”

Fast forward to 2022: I’m covering Comedy for Podcast Magazine®, and Gottfried is on my radar. As I begin reaching out to comedy podcasters, Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast keeps coming up in conversations. It was even one of Scott Curtis’s favorites, as per his interview for the February 2022 feature on Behind the Bits

Sadly, I won’t get the chance to interview Gilbert, given his passing on 4/12/22. But we can all enjoy every episode of his podcast.

I had just begun listening to it a few months prior to his death, in anticipation of eventually being able to schedule an interview. I can say this: he was a funny guy all the way to the end. My favorite episode was “Blazing Saddles,” a 45th Anniversary Tribute with Andrew Bergman and Norman Steinberg. It was great to listen to everyone reminisce about the “old times,” when comedians could push the envelope a bit without getting slapped. (Remember those days?)

Gilbert was a great interviewer. He knew not to dominate the conversation and let his guests shine. But you certainly heard his infectious laugh.

RIP, Gilbert.
