The word \u201cpivot\u201d became a buzz word in the early days of Covid-19, and the Coronavirus is still a hot topic during the summer of 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On June 29, NPR (National Public Radio) pivoted to launch a new daily news podcast called <\/span>Consider This<\/span><\/i>, which is rebranded from <\/span>Coronavirus Daily<\/span><\/i>\u2014a news podcast launched March 18 to cover the pandemic\u2014that appears to have waning interest with news podcast listeners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the afternoon time slot, <\/span>Consider This<\/span><\/i> is the counterpart to <\/span>UP First<\/span><\/i>, the morning news podcast. <\/span>Consider This<\/span><\/i> has close ties to <\/span>All Things Considered<\/span><\/i>, including the four hosts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Neal Carruth, Senior Director of on-demand news programming at NPR told Caroline Crampton of <\/span>Niemanlab.org<\/span><\/a> that <\/span>Coronavirus Daily<\/span><\/i> was up and on air only six days after it was approved. In six weeks, its audience grew by more than 56 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pretty confident that <\/span><\/i>Coronavirus Daily<\/span> was both the fastest launch in NPR history and the fastest-growth audience of any podcast,\u201d<\/span><\/i> said Neal Carruth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NPR is developing more short-form news podcast content as it rapidly responds to news events and trends. Current podcasts include: <\/span>Up First<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Indicator from Planet Money<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Shortwave<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>NPR Politics<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Life Kit<\/span><\/i>. Carruth said many news producers are responding to news trends with pop-up podcasts to cover hot news topics like the 2019 Impeachment Hearings.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Carruth, the idea behind <\/span>UP First<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Consider This <\/span><\/i>is to broaden the story lines and coverage for listeners. He explained how the shows will cover a broad spectrum of stories, including debates over race and policing, the presidential election, and other timely news topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pop-up podcasts will continue to make up part of the podcast landscape as news trends occur. In 2020, listeners can expect more social, cultural, and economic news-based podcasts, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n
